King mansion added to historic register

The King Mansion has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, a prestigious title awarded by the National Park Service and the United States Department of the Interior.

The house at 1720 East King Ave. and a nearby carriage house were built in 1885 in 19th century Italianate style for industrialist Ahimaaz King. He managed the King Powder Company and the Peters Cartridge Company.

At the time, life in Kings Mills and Deerfield Township revolved around these mills.

The award comes after months of planning by members of the Deerfield Township Community Development Department and Sullebarger Associates, a local historic preservation consultant firm.

The township is raising money to restore the building. The community is considering turning the mansion, into a museum and meeting place.
