Pina Bausch: a bold and committed pioneer

Even if you think you have never seen a Pina Bausch work, you are likely to have seen something that has been influenced by her.

The truthfulness and directness of the dance theatre she created made it speak powerfully to audiences; there was always profound substance behind the style.

The style was, however, unmistakable, with a company made up of dancers of all shapes, sizes and ages

“What I try to do is find a language for life,” she said

This she did, over and over again, creating surreal dreamscapes into which all the confusion, chaos, misery, violence, sensuality, joy and sheer vitality of humanity was poured.

That sums up Bausch’s vision. It is at once bleak and frighteningly honest in its depiction of human nature and at the same time uplifting against the odds. It is a remarkable body of work from a bold and committed pioneer.
