EIGHT months after being sacked from what was reputed to be a $US40 million contract for racist and sexist remarks about a black women's basketball team, Don Imus is back.

Imus, a contrarian known for skewering politicians and reputedly the man for whom the term "shock jock" was coined, will return to the airwaves on Monday in New York.
Black commentators refer to him as a trash-talking racist. Other critics regard him as a homophobe, but talk radio sees him as a revenue goldmine.
WABC station manager Phil Boyce said advertising rates for the early morning spot with Imus would double or triple.
"He has apologised for it (the 'nappy-head' remark) a hundred times. He knows that it was a mistake and he won't repeat it," Mr Boyce said. "America is a forgiving place. We like to give people a second chance."
